Eastward approach signal – Number plate 729 – 1 unit color light
Location – 4121 feet west of Home Signal

Above signals will display indication as prescribed by Timetable rules 281 – 285 and 291.

Trains in either direction making switching movements through Interlocking limits must when part of train is left on main track, leave sufficient room so that engine will clear of Home Signal upon returning to train. In making the initial switch entering Interlocking limits, signal aspect will be green over red (rule 281). Before signal indication can be displayed, for engine to make reverse movement through Interlocking returning to train, a member of crew must operate time release (located in Ann Arbor box in northwest angle of crossing) and wait 4 minutes until red over yellow indication to process is received (Rule 290).

In event indication permitting train or engine to proceed is not displayed on Home Signal after time release runs its course, and the cause is not apparent, a member of crew will go to Ann Arbor “manual release” box located in northwest angle of crossing and following instruction posted therein.

For convenient reference the instructions posted in the “manual release” box are reproduced below:

1.

Be sure no other trains are on or approaching the crossing from other directions.

2.

Operate manual emergency release. Turn knob as far as possible: Release knob allowing pointer on dial to return to normal position, the signal required should now display proceed indication.

3.

In case proceed signal is not displayed after operating release:

a.

If indicator lamp is lighted – Trainmen may give hand signal to proceed if no other trains are on or closely approaching the crossing from other directions.

b.

If indicator lamp does not light: Trainmen must place lighted fuses on C&O 100 feet in each direction. Trainmen may give hand signal to pass home signal but stop in clear of C&O crossing. After standing 5 minutes if no other trains are on or closely approaching the crossing from other directions train may proceed.

4.

If it has been necessary to use the release on hand signals: Trainmen will notify Ann Arbor and C&O dispatchers by telephones which are located in box. 5. Be sure to lock the box when leaving.
